Inside the Diversity Problem in the Design Industry

Diversity is the range of human differences, including but not limited to race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, social class, physical ability or attributes, religious or ethical values system, national origin, and political beliefs.

It's the responsibility of a brand to create a safe space where everyone can feel welcome and their needs are met.

However, there are problems that diversity can create in the fashion/design industry.

In the fashion/design industry, diversity means to accommodate the need of different age groups, sizes, and preferences in the items on sale and the faces representing the brand.

Some of the diversity problem in the fashion industry are

Cultural diversity - Appreciate cultures rather than appropriate them.

Sex/gender diversity - workplace and designs should be made accessible for all genders.

Religious diversity- respect everyone's spiritual beliefs. Make more designs that work for all types of beliefs.

Disability diversity - disability inclusion at work and creating designs suitable for disabled people is not doing them favors, it's about recognizing strength, talent and catering for their needs.

Racial diversity - Acceptance and inclusion of employees from all racial identities and groups should be the norm in the fashion industry. Representation by including more racial identities in their campaigns, on the runaway and Ads.

Size - Make designs for every shape and size..

In conclusion - Diversity is very important in the fashion industry. Every culture, every nationality, every single person sees the world in a different way. Lack of diversity makes it hard for brands to reach their target audience.
